About Helen

I am an eclectic artist living and working in Brooklyn, New York.

The work that I create explores the duality of art and the every day. To highlight this relationship I am interested in finding balance between figurative and abstract representations of the body through sculpture. The equilibrium between opposites is where I find intuitive answers about the lived experience.

Clay is a new medium that I am working with. It allows me to create theatrical, primitive, expressive, tragic and comedic forms that represent archetypal effigies.Color is a language that I use to speak to myself with; expressive organization of emotion through color freely abandons all words and explanations. It represents wild emotion while the underling sculpture could be more stoic or tragic. It is this relationship between opposites that expresses an eternal truth in my eyes.

I work with fiber and soft sculpture because the medium allows me to explore the transformation of sculpture to wearable object. Through the experimentation of carving foam and painting with hand dyed felt, bold colors arch over form to create abstractions within the hat or garment. Art seeps into the everyday through the ritual or the act of wearing, and through the ritual of living my art is created through sculpture and form.

Experimental millinery, textiles, watercolor, and performing in the costumes that I make for friends' film projects is currently leading me into new territories. Apart from my personal work as an artist, I have worked in theater, film, and hat sales to support my dreams!
